Read Watch IconThe Department of Public Utilities (DPU) operates the county-owned electric, gas, water & wastewater systems under the jurisdiction and control of the Board of Public Utilities (BPU).  The BPU consists of five voting members appointed by County Council.  The Utilities Manager and County Manager serve as ex-efficio non-voting members.  Members serve five-year staggered terms .  Each year, the BPU elects a Chair and Vice-chair from within its membership.

Regular BPU meetings are normally held the third Wednesday of each month at 5:30 p.m. at the Municipal Building Council Chambers at 1000 Central Avenue.  Special meetings may be called as needed with 72 hours notice.  The location of special meetings may vary and may not be streamed live.  Closed meetings are held as necessary with 72 hours notice.  BPU agendas are prepared and published at least 72 hours prior to the meeting.  The agenda for every regular BPU meeting includes time for comments from the public. 

 Public Attendance Prohibited at BPU March 25 Meeting

Public in-person attendance at the March 25, Board of Public Utilities (BPU) meeting will be prohibited in accordance with the Public Health Emergency Order Closing All Businesses and Non-Profit Entities Except for those Deemed Essential and Providing Additional Restrictions on Mass Gatherings Due to COVID-19 issued from the New Mexico Department of Health on March 23. Officials with the Los Alamos Department of Public Utilities encourage citizens to live-stream the meeting and submit public comment via email.

The BPU meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, Mar. 25, 2020 at 5:30 p.m. and it will take place in Council Chambers at 1000 Central Ave., Los Alamos. To comply with the Order, the Los Alamos Department of Public Utilities (DPU) will have minimal staff in council chambers to present to the BPU. BPU members will participate by phone.

BPU and DPU encourage public comment be provided via email to Citizens are advised to write PUBLIC COMMENT in the subject line of the email. In the body include a name, address, whether the comment relates to an agenda item or not and the comment. Comments will be read into the record at the appropriate section of the agenda.


We are currently accepting applications through April 6th for membership on the Board of Public Utilities for a five-year term beginning on July 1st, 2020.  

If you meet the eligibility requirements, have a selfless desire to serve the community and think your knowledge and experience might be an asset to the BPU, then you are encouraged to apply.  

Please note that no LAC board shall have more than a simple majority of members registered in the same political party. Due to the party affiliations of the current members (1-R, 1-DTS, 3-D), a Democrat cannot be appointed to fill the vacancy beginning July 1st, 2020.
