Health Care Assistance Program

As of July 1, 2014, New Mexico State has taken a direct role in funding local hospitals to cover medical services.  As a result, the Los Alamos County Health Care Assistance Program (HCAP) no longer covers services such as surgeries, vision care or hospice. However, HCAP is funded by local gross receipts tax, is administered by the Los Alamos County Council, and does cover behavioral health services that are not already covered by Medicaid, Medicare, or Affordable Care Act insurance under the New Mexico Health Insurance Exchange. HCAP reimburses contracted behavioral health providers for services rendered to county residents who meet low income guidelines, including mental health counseling and substance abuse treatment programs, as well as health related programs and services for detainees at Los Alamos County Jail. Click here to view the policy.

To qualify you must be a resident of Los Alamos County for at least 90 days and receive an income at or below 225% of HHS 2019 Poverty Guidelines. Single applicants may not have more than $5,000 in liquid assets, and family applicants may not have more than $10,000 in liquid assets.  Click here for HCAP application forms.

The Social Services Division supports residents with a range of programs and services by contracting with local non-profit agencies including:

  • Family Strengths Network provides: Parent education and family development

  • Los Alamos Public Schools provides: School-based drug and alcohol prevention activities

  • Youth Activity Centers provides: After-school activities for grades 3rd - 8th

  • Los Alamos Teen Center provides: After-school activities for grades 9th - 12th

  • JJAB provides: Juvenile justice programs and services

  • Los Alamos Retired & Senior Organization (LARSO) provides: Operation of the two senior centers, and home-based services for older and frail adults.

  • Health Commons provides: Medical and behavioral health services provided by Las Clinicas del Norte and the New Mexico Department of Health.

  • LA Cares provides: Monthly food distribution, emergency food boxes, and emergency assistance with rent and utilities to Los Alamos County Residents.

  •  Las Cumbres provides: comprehensive Family Resources, Support, and Parent Education Programs.

Family Strengths Network

Family Strengths Network (FSN) is currently under contract to provide a broad spectrum of parent education and family development programs, including support services for parents and youth. FSN also works with local organizations involved with parents and families to identify and provide services, activities, workshops, classes and events through the use of clearly identified best practices and family development models.

Los Alamos Public Schools

A Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) currently exists between the County and the Los Alamos Public Schools for the purpose of funding or defraying some or all of the costs of providing school-based prevention services. Under this MOA, a prevention specialist was hired and is in place at the high school and middle school. The School Prevention Specialist works directly with school staff, youth and their families to decrease instances of substance abuse, child abuse, violence, suicide, truancy and other at-risk behaviors.

Youth Activity Centers (LA & WR)

The Los Alamos Family Council supports after-school and school holiday closure programs for grades 3rd - 8th. The Youth Activity Centers are located in Los Alamos, on the east side of Ashley Pond and White Rock, behind the White Rock Branch Library, on Sherwood Blvd.

Los Alamos Teen Center

The Los Alamos Teen Center  provides a safe place for teenagers to gather, study, and have fun. Los Alamos County funds the contract that is administered by The Family YMCA. The Teen Center is free for all teenagers, grades 9th - 12th, in Los Alamos County.  For more specific program information, please visit the Teen Center's Facebook page.
 

JJAB

The Los Alamos Juvenile Justice Advisory Board (JJAB) provides ongoing coordination, development, administration, and evaluation of juvenile services and programs, including education, assessment, prevention, and early intervention for Los Alamos County. The areas of focus for programs administered by JJAB include:

  • Alcohol and/or substance abuse assessment, prevention, deterrence, and treatment.
  • Delinquency prevention.
  • Leadership development and mentoring.
  • Parent and juvenile education and support.
  • Gender specific programming to improve self-esteem and decision making.
  • Multi-generational engagement in the community.
  • Restorative justice.
  • Healthy living and productive life skills.

Los Alamos Retired & Senior Organization (LARSO)

The Senior Centers are operated for Los Alamos County under contract with a local non-profit organization, Los Alamos Retired and Senior Organization (LARSO). The two centers are available to seniors for various activities.

The Los Alamos Betty Ehart Senior Center is located at 1101 Bathtub Row, next to Mesa Public Library. The White Rock Senior Center is located at 133 Longview Drive in the Municipal Complex.

LARSO provides congregate and home delivered meals, transportation services, educational and social programs, entertainment, and volunteer opportunities to the Los Alamos senior citizen population. An Adult Day Care (Day Out) program is also available to give caregivers respite. The program provides a variety of supervised activities in a cheerful and safe surrounding. Adults of all ages who may be lonely or homebound due to short-term or long-term physical problems can benefit from some time away from home with new friends.

Health Commons

The Health Commons is here to serve the community's health needs, under contract with Las Clinicas del Norte and the State Public Health Office . The Health Commons offers a multitude of services, including behavioral health, for all ages and schedules.

LA Cares

Las Cumbres Community Services

Las Cumbres provides comprehensive Family Resources, Support, and Parent Education Programs. Services are open to parents with children ages 0-6. Services include early intervention, integrated developmental and therapeutic services, infant and early childhood mental health services, and family navigation and behavioral health services.
