Tune into AM 1610 (WQFJ 525) during an emergency!
Los Alamos Emergency Management Radio broadcasts 24/7 on 1610AM. Typically, the station will play a recorded loop of the National Weather Service's weather updates for Los Alamos. The signal is audible in most of the town site, White Rock and much of the Laboratory. This is a low-power AM signal and it’s subject to radio propagation. You can hear it much better during the day than you can at night, especially during the cold weather. Totally non-commercial, this is strictly a tool via which the County's Emergency Management team can disseminate information to the public.
The main purpose of the system is to provide advisories for emergencies and disruptions, such as:
-
Alerts and Notifications
-
Coordination and Control
-
Communication
-
Emergency Public Information
-
Evacuation Procedures
-
Emergency Sheltering Locations
-
Emergency Response
-
Controlled-burn Information
-
Winter-storm Warnings
-
Road Closures
-
Electrical and Telephone Outages
When there are no emergency activities in progress, this station may broadcast public service announcements in addition to NWS weather, such as:
